El padre de Picasso period pintor y profesor en l. a. Escuela de Bellas Artes y Oficios. Picasso aprendió de él los rudimentos del entrenamiento académico formal en arte. Luego fue a estudiar a l. a. Academia de las Artes en Madrid, pero no se graduó. Antes de cumplir los dieciocho años había llegado al punto de mayor rebeldía; repudió los angeles estética anémica de l. a. academia junto con l. a. prosa pedestre del realismo y, naturalmente, se unió a aquellos artistas y escritores que se llamaban a sí mismos modernistas, a los inconformistas, aquellos a los que Sabartés llamó "la élite del pensamiento catalán" y que se habían agrupado en torno al café de artistas Els Quatre Gats. Durante 1899 y 1900 los únicos temas que Picasso consideró meritorios fueron aquellos que reflejaban l. a. "verdad final", los angeles fugacidad de l. a. vida humana y los angeles inevitabilidad de los angeles muerte.
