I’ve just seen the new piece you did,’ he says, doing little to remove the suspicion that his wrath has been incurred yet again. After all, it’s not an argument that he convincingly won – not in my eyes, at least. But Lemmy is full of surprises. ‘I just wanted to say . . thanks. ’ Which is, of course, the very thing that Würzel had been allowed to do in the first place. But I decide it’s best not to go there, with the beast having seemingly been tamed. Würzel records just two more albums with Motörhead before leaving the band because of ‘personal issues’.

You don’t slag down the country that has supported you for so many years. ‘Lem has lost touch with this country. He will give you a lot of good reasons why he went to America and they are very valid. But I can’t live a lie; if it’s not “Motörhead England” any more then I don’t really want to know. I’d rather go and do something else. ’ It’s shocking to hear Würzel talk this way. Yeah, he’s had a few, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t mean what he says, if you know what I mean. I ask if the perception of Lemmy being a dictator is the wrong one for people to have, but he insists not.

He gets in all the papers and big magazines – and the rest of us get the fanzines. We’ve got a readership of 200 while he’s got a readership of two million and he doesn’t even talk about the band. It would be great if he said “that solo was by so-and-so” and “they wrote that bit”. But all he talks about is his fucking communal swimming pool and how hot it is in LA. Who wants to know about that? indd 41 10/05/2012 17:47 majority of them are couriers and people on the dole, saving all their money to come to our shows.
